Although I have loved the written word since I was young, I had no plans to be a writer until I went to college. Unsure of my path in life, I found the campus newspaper, a place where I could write, take photos and create something new each week.
A decade-long career in journalism followed. Well, to be perfectly honest, an off-and-on career as an ink-stained wretch followed, but you can read more about that on other pages of this site. I have worked as a general assignment reporter, an education reporter, a photographer, a copy editor, a columnist, a graphic artist, a feature writer, a layout person, a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a ... wait, what was I saying?
Oh yeah. I've done just about every job a newsroom has to offer - at least in passing - at one point or another. I covered everything from elementary school spelling bees to city council meetings, from new businesses in the community to the crimes that shocked it. I loved every minute of it.
But times change and we must learn to change with them or risk being left behind. That was a lesson that my last newspaper employer learned too late. Despite our attempts to adapt to a digital future, the Today Newspapers group folded in 2009. I toyed with the idea of looking for another newspaper job. I am certain I could have found one, but decided instead that it was better to focus on a new career path.
In this section of the site, you'll see some of my favorite articles, page layouts and photographs from my time as a journalist. Take a look around. There are a lot of memories in these pages.
